The spine of the edition
One learner, twelve weeks.
Your learning system keeps the courses, the lessons and the marks. Vivalto watches the twelve weeks around them and acts in the gaps.
- Week 1 Enrolled, and has not opened the first lesson A quiet learner in week one is the strongest single predictor of a learner who never finishes. The edition notices this on the day rather than at the first deadline.
- Week 2 First module completed The first milestone. Vivalto records it, moves the learner into the next cohort and lets the manager see it without asking anyone.
- Week 5 Two weeks behind the cohort Behind is a segment, not a report. A learner enters it on their own and leaves it the same way, and the follow up is attached to the segment rather than sent by hand.
- Week 8 Caught up, and now ahead The learner passes the milestone that carries recognition. This is where a level, a badge or a certificate is granted.
- Week 11 One module left, and the deadline is close A condition counted against a target, which is the same counter the engine runs against any target, with a different thing counted.
- Week 12 Finished, and the manager already knows The completion lands on the learner record and on the manager's list on the same day, because both read the same record.
The other reader
What a manager of thirty people sees.
A training programme has two readers and most tools serve only the learner. The manager gets a spreadsheet at the end of the term, which is too late to act on.
The part we get right first
A badge says almost nothing about the learner.
Recognition is the point of the edition and it is also where this kind of product goes wrong, so the four rules below are settled before the first badge is granted rather than after the first complaint.
A shared badge page carries no name
A page anyone can open shows the course, the level and the date, and nothing that identifies the person. A name, an employer, a school or a mark on a public page is a leak, whatever the intention was.
The identifier on that page is one way, and the check is made to fail
Turning an identifier into hexadecimal looks like a hash and reverses in a single line, which is how this goes wrong in practice. The rule is a real one way function with a secret, and the check that guards it is tested by breaking the page on purpose and watching the check go red.
The learner decides what is shared
Nothing about a learner is published anywhere by default. Sharing is an act the learner takes, and it is reversible.
Learners under eighteen need work that comes first
Children's data carries duties beyond the four rules on this page. Where a programme includes under-eighteens, that work happens before the programme runs rather than after it, and we say so at the start rather than at the review.

It is not your learning system
The courses, the lessons, the marks and the assessment stay where they are. Vivalto reads progress and acts on it.
It does not grade anyone
A milestone is a fact it is told, not a judgement it makes. Whoever grades today still grades.
It is not the record of a qualification
A certificate that carries legal weight belongs to the awarding body. Vivalto records recognition inside your programme, which is a different thing and should be called one.
